WordPress vs Wix vs Squarespace: Which Is Best for a Kenyan Business Website?

WordPress vs Wix vs Squarespace: Which Is Best for a Kenyan Business Website?

Short answer: for most Kenyan businesses that want to grow, take M-Pesa directly and own their website outright, WordPress (with WooCommerce for shops) is the most flexible choice, as long as someone looks after updates and security. Wix is a good fit if you want to build and edit a simple site yourself and don’t mind a monthly subscription, and it does offer M-Pesa through some third-party payment providers in Kenya. Squarespace makes beautiful sites with very little effort, but from Kenya its payment options are limited mainly to PayPal, so it suits portfolios and brochure sites better than local online shops.

Below we compare the three on price (checked on their official sites on 16 October 2026), payments, SEO, ownership and ease of use. We build on WordPress, so we’ve tried hard to be fair: there are good reasons to choose either of the other two. For our own WordPress work, see WordPress development in Kenya.

WordPress: maximum control and M-Pesa, with upkeep

WordPress is free, open-source software that runs a large share of the world’s websites. “Self-hosted” WordPress means it lives on hosting you choose, and you own everything.

Strengths for Kenyan businesses

  • M-Pesa done properly. With WooCommerce you can take M-Pesa STK Push directly into your own Paybill or Till via Safaricom’s Daraja API, or through gateways such as PesaPal or iPay, plus PayPal and cards for overseas buyers. See WooCommerce shops with M-Pesa.
  • No platform lock-in. You can change hosting, designers or agencies without rebuilding.
  • Unlimited flexibility. Bookings, memberships, multilingual sites, CRM, bulk SMS, WhatsApp and KRA eTIMS integrations are all possible.
  • Strong SEO control. Full control of titles, URLs, schema, redirects and speed.

Trade-offs

  • Someone has to maintain it. Core, theme and plugin updates, backups and security monitoring are essential. Neglected WordPress sites are the ones that get hacked. A care plan covers this; ours start from USD 600 a year.
  • Hosting quality matters. Cheap hosting is a common cause of slow or unreliable sites. (Our hosting includes SSL, with backups as a paid add-on.)
  • Higher upfront build cost than doing it yourself on a builder, because a professional usually builds it. Our websites start from KES 65,000.

Wix: easiest to build yourself

Wix is a hosted website builder with a drag-and-drop editor, AI creation tools and thousands of templates.

Pricing (wix.com/plans, checked 16 Oct 2026). There’s a free plan with Wix branding and a Wix address. Paid plans are Light, Core, Business and Business Elite, listed at US$17, 29, 39 and 159 a month for US visitors, billed yearly. Wix says prices and currency vary by location, and our check from outside the US showed slightly higher tax-inclusive figures, so look at the price shown to you at checkout. Paid plans include a custom domain free for the first year, hosting and 24/7 support.

Strengths

  • Very easy to start and edit without technical skills.
  • Everything included: hosting, security and updates are Wix’s job.
  • Payments in Kenya through partners. Wix’s help centre lists PayPal, DPO Group, SeerBit, Peach Payments and Paystack for Kenya, and its DPO Group and Paystack guides list M-Pesa as a supported method. You need a plan that accepts payments (Core or above).

Trade-offs

  • You rent, you don’t own. If you leave Wix, you rebuild the site elsewhere.
  • Monthly costs add up over the years, especially for e-commerce plans, plus payment provider fees.
  • M-Pesa goes through a third-party provider, not directly into your own Paybill or Till via Daraja, so check the provider’s fees and settlement times.
  • Less flexible for custom features and integrations with local systems.

Squarespace: beautiful templates, limited payments from Kenya

Squarespace is a hosted builder known for polished, design-led templates.

Pricing (squarespace.com/pricing, checked 16 Oct 2026). Basic is US$19 a month billed yearly (US$25 monthly), Core US$29 (US$39), Plus US$49 (US$65) and Advanced US$99 (US$139). There’s no free plan, but every site starts with a 14-day free trial. Basic charges a 2% transaction fee on online-store sales; Core and above charge 0%. Annual plans include a free domain for the first year.

Strengths

  • Excellent design out of the box with very little effort.
  • Hosting, SSL and updates included, with 24/7 support.
  • Good for portfolios, creatives, consultants and brochure sites.

Trade-offs for Kenya

  • Limited payment options. Squarespace connects to Squarespace Payments, Stripe, PayPal and Square (in-person only). Squarespace Payments isn’t offered in Kenya, and Squarespace’s own help centre recommends PayPal for African countries that Stripe serves through Paystack. There’s no native M-Pesa.
  • No ownership of the platform, as with Wix.
  • Fewer integrations with local services such as bulk SMS or eTIMS.

Total cost over three years: a fair way to compare

Don’t compare a builder’s monthly price with a one-off WordPress build. Compare the full cost over two or three years:

  • Wix or Squarespace: plan cost × 36 months, plus your time to build and update, plus payment provider fees, plus the domain after year one.
  • WordPress: the build (ours from KES 65,000), plus hosting and domain each year, plus a care plan if you want it handled for you, plus any payment gateway fees.

For a simple brochure site you’ll update yourself, a builder can be cheaper. For a shop taking M-Pesa or a site you plan to grow, WordPress usually works out better value. You own it, there’s no platform fee on sales, and it grows with you. Our website cost guide breaks down build and running costs in KES and USD.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose WordPress if you want M-Pesa straight into your own account, plan to add features, care about SEO, or want to own your site outright. Get a professional to build it and keep it maintained.
  • Choose Wix if you want to build and manage a small site yourself, are happy with a monthly subscription, and M-Pesa through a provider such as DPO Group or Paystack meets your needs.
  • Choose Squarespace if design matters most, you mainly need a portfolio or brochure site, and PayPal is enough for any payments.

What we usually recommend for Kenyan SMEs is a WordPress site, built for phones, with WooCommerce and M-Pesa if you sell online, and a care plan so updates and backups never slip. See WordPress website design.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress better than Wix for a business in Kenya?

For most growing businesses, yes, especially if you need M-Pesa directly into your Paybill or Till, custom features or full SEO control. Wix is easier to build yourself and suits simple sites well.

Can I accept M-Pesa on Wix?

Wix lists DPO Group, Paystack, SeerBit, Peach Payments and PayPal as payment providers in Kenya, and its DPO Group and Paystack guides list M-Pesa as a supported method. You need a Wix plan that accepts payments.

Can I accept M-Pesa on Squarespace?

Not natively. Squarespace connects to Squarespace Payments, Stripe, PayPal and Square, and Squarespace Payments isn’t available in Kenya. Kenya-based stores mainly rely on PayPal.

Is WordPress free?

The WordPress software is free and open source. You pay for hosting, a domain, any premium themes or plugins, and the design and build, plus ongoing maintenance if you don’t do it yourself.

Can you move my Wix or Squarespace site to WordPress?

Yes. Builder sites can’t be exported directly, so we rebuild the site on WordPress, move the content and set up redirects so you keep your Google rankings.

How much do Wix and Squarespace cost in Kenya?

Both price in US dollars and say prices vary by location. On 16 October 2026, Wix listed US$17 to 159 a month and Squarespace US$19 to 99 a month on yearly billing. Check the price shown at checkout.
