Local SEO for Nairobi Businesses: How to Get into the Google Map Pack
Short answer: Google picks the three businesses in the map pack based on relevance, distance and prominence. You can’t move your premises, but you can improve relevance and prominence: a complete, verified Google Business Profile, steady reviews, a website with clear local pages, consistent name, address and phone everywhere, and real local mentions.
Searches like “accountant Westlands”, “car wash near me” or “web design Nairobi” show a map with three businesses before any normal results. Those three get most of the calls. Getting there is the heart of our local SEO in Kenya service.
| Ranking factor | What Google looks at | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | Does the business match the search? | Right categories, services, website content |
| Distance | How close to the searcher or named area | Accurate pin, service areas, area pages |
| Prominence | How well known and trusted | Reviews, local links, mentions, website authority |
1. Get your Google Business Profile right
This is the foundation. Choose the right main category, add accurate hours, services, photos and your website, and verify it. Follow our guide to setting up and optimising your Google Business Profile in Kenya.
2. Build a steady flow of reviews
Reviews influence both rankings and whether people call. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link on WhatsApp and receipts, and reply to every review. A steady flow beats a burst of reviews once a year.
3. Make your website match your profile
Your website should use exactly the same business name, address and phone number as your profile. Add a contact page with an embedded map and directions using landmarks people in Nairobi actually use.
4. Create pages for your services and areas
If you serve Kilimani, Westlands and Karen, a single “we serve all of Nairobi” line won’t rank. Useful pages for each main service, and for key areas where it makes sense, give Google clear signals. Make each page genuinely useful, not copy-and-paste with a different estate name.
5. Get listed in local directories
Consistent listings in reputable Kenyan directories, industry associations and chambers of commerce help Google trust your details. Check that old listings don’t show a former address or number.
6. Earn local mentions and links
Sponsoring a local event, partnering with nearby businesses, being featured in local media or supplier pages all build prominence.
7. Make the website fast and mobile-friendly
Local searches happen on phones, often on the move. A slow site loses the call. See why a WordPress site is slow.
8. Keep it active and measure
Post updates on your profile, add new photos and track calls, direction requests and website clicks in the profile’s performance report.
Common reasons a business doesn’t show

Frequently asked questions
What is the Google map pack?
The box of three businesses on a map that Google shows for local searches, above most normal results.
How long does it take to get into the map pack?
It depends on competition. Less competitive areas can see movement within weeks, busy categories take months.
Do I need a physical office in Nairobi?
You need a real address or service area. Service businesses can hide their address and set the areas they cover.
Do reviews really affect rankings?
Yes. Review count, quality and recency all influence local rankings and whether people choose you.
Can I rank in areas where I’m not located?
It’s harder in the map pack, but useful area pages can help you rank in normal results for those areas.
