How to Set Up and Optimise Your Google Business Profile in Kenya
Short answer: create your profile at google.com/business, choose the most accurate main category, add your exact address or service area, hours, phone and website, verify it, then keep it active with photos, reviews and regular updates. A complete, active profile is the single biggest factor in showing up on Google Maps.
When someone in Nairobi searches “printing shop near me” or “dentist Kilimani”, Google shows a map with three businesses first. Those come from Google Business Profiles. It’s free, and for many local businesses it brings more calls than the website. It’s a core part of our local SEO in Kenya service.
| Profile section | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Business name | Your real trading name, no extra keywords | Keyword stuffing can get the profile suspended |
| Category | The most specific main category, plus a few extras | Strongest signal for which searches you appear in |
| Address or service area | Exact pin, or service area if you visit customers | Decides where you show on the map |
| Hours | Accurate, including holidays | Avoids frustrated visits |
| Phone and website | A number you answer, your main site | Turns views into calls and visits |
| Photos | Real photos of premises, team and work | Builds trust and clicks |
| Reviews | Ask every happy customer | Trust and ranking |
Step 1: Create or claim your profile
Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account the business controls, ideally not a staff member’s personal account. Search for your business. If it already exists, claim it. If not, create it.
Step 2: Choose the right category
Pick the most specific main category that describes what you are, for example “Dental clinic” rather than “Health”. Add secondary categories only for things you genuinely offer.
Step 3: Address or service area
If customers visit you, place the pin exactly. Kenyan addresses can be vague, so add the building name, floor and a landmark in the address lines. If you go to customers, such as plumbers or cleaners, hide the address and set a service area.
Step 4: Verify
Google may verify by phone, email, video or a postcard, depending on the business. Video verification usually means showing your signage, premises and proof such as business documents. Follow the instructions carefully and don’t edit key details while verification is pending.
Step 5: Complete every section
Add a description in plain language, services or products with prices if you can, opening hours, special holiday hours, attributes, your WhatsApp or booking link and your website. A complete profile outranks a thin one.
Step 6: Add real photos
Upload your logo, a cover photo, the outside of the building so people recognise it, the inside, your team and your work. Add new photos regularly.
Step 7: Get and reply to reviews
Ask every happy customer for a review and make it easy with your review link on WhatsApp, receipts and email. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and briefly. Never buy reviews.
Step 8: Keep it active
Post updates and offers, answer questions, and keep hours current. Activity signals that the business is open and engaged.
Common mistakes in Kenya
- Adding keywords to the business name (“Best Plumber Nairobi Cheap”).
- Several duplicate listings for the same business.
- Wrong pin location, sending customers to the wrong street.
- Using a number nobody answers.
- Profile owned by a former employee or agency, so you lose access.
Connect the profile to your website
Google trusts a profile more when the website matches it: the same name, address and phone, a contact page with a map and location pages for the areas you serve. Our guide to SEO costs in Kenya explains how ongoing local SEO is priced.
